Research, ENGAGEMENT
& FACILITATION

Engagement is the linchpin of transformational strategy.

You are intentionally re-designing and nurturing your working culture; you cannot do this without your people and partners. Whether your goal is reaching Net Zero, removing health inequality, designing supply chains or networks for social impact and value, or advancing robust partnerships, the solution is simple - regular, meaningful engagement.

ENGAGEMENT IS FAR MORE THAN ASKING QUESTIONS AN OPINIONS

Do you ever feel like you are ticking boxes with your engagement plans? Perhaps you have conversations with stakeholders who 'agree in principle...' but there are no results or lasting action? Or maybe your board members are divided on the subject or don't fully understand the relevance and context.

THE GOAL OF ENGAGEMENT IS TO CREATE A CONNECTION

Its making space to listen and learn.

Viewing challenges and opportunities in 360 - is everyone in the room, and have you heard their perspective When we meet people where they are and invite them to join our journey, we create conducive and empowering conditions for people to act.

Then together, we co-create new ideas, behaviours and ways of working. We also help you to build contiuous engagement and feedback loops, which it critical to sucessful implementation.

  • THE CLIENT:
    NHS North East London

    THE CHALLENGE:
North East London health and care partnership covers eight London boroughs, five NHS Trusts, and more than 250 GP practices.

In 2019, as a recently formed partnership, senior leaders were keen to ensure the threat of climate change and its impact on health and wellbeing was taken seriously.

NetZero commitments and climate and health improvements were being delivered throughout the partnership organisations. The CCG wanted a centralised and coordinated overview of the work to encourage greater collaboration, align goals and direction, share learning and resources, reduce duplication, and boost momentum.

    OUR SUPPORT:
Design and delivery of a stakeholder development programme to map, engage and co-design a multi-partner workstream. This included:

    • stakeholder interviews for those working in sustainability, senior management and workstream leads,

    • multi-partner workshops and developments sessions

    • programme co-design and recommendations for successful implementation.

    THE GOALS:

    • Understand the scale and impact of current activities to improve climate and health across North East London.

    • Engage the main actors from across the partnership and encourage collaboration

    • Identify collaborative opportunities and risks.

    OUTCOMES
    Engagement:
We created a Climate Action Workstream within the Health Anchors for North East London, and gained buy-in from all NHS partners and several local authorities.

Framing: We placed health creation and wellbeing at the centre of the climate change agenda, and introduced climate change impacts as a significant risk to health equity.

Co-Design: We facilitated the co-design of a partnership plan, focusing on small and tangible actions to build momentum and trust in partnership working.

Implementation Risks: Authored a critical risks and recommendations report for successful implementation, including:

    • Using culture change methods and techniques to inspire a climate and health movement

    • resourcing a business manager to progress the workstream and coordinate action, and build momentum

    • To structure SRO support from a technical and financial viewpoint and increase senior presence across the agenda.

    WHAT DID OUR CLIENT SAY:

"We have twice commissioned Briony and The Circular Life Ltd to undertake work for North East London CCG.

Briony (works) with kindness and compassion whilst challenging us and helping us to think differently about how we work as a system - today and in the future.

In the face of tight budgets, The Circular Life offers excellent value for money. It has enabled us to motivate and inspire staff from the offset".

    Deputy Programme Manager

  • THE CLIENT:
Hackney Wick Business Community (in partnership with Echo)

    THE CHALLENGE:
Systemic problems, like climate change or resource depletion, cannot be tackled in isolation. But many small businesses feel confined by their organisation regarding environmental improvements.

We wanted to show business owners that their neighbours - and even their competitors - can become great collaborators and support systems when greening their businesses.

    OUR SUPPORT:
We invited businesses and organisations in Hackney Wick, London, to join us for two half-day events titled - Global Challenges, Local Solutions.

We got under the skin of what it means to be a green business and used a 360 viewpoint to ensure every voice and perspective was heard and valued. Then we created themed spaces and set challenges to instigate practical collective solutions.

    THE GOALS:
To bring people together, share learning and create conditions conducive to positive change.

    OUTCOMES & BENEFITS

More than 20 small business owners were ready to unite on a 2030 vision of ‘The Wick’ with early goals of: Zero Waste, Plastic-Free, Net-Zero, Inclusive and, Thriving.

    Short-term actions included:

    • Shared and co-designed procurement policies/commitments to removing single-use and increasing waste reduction.

    • Engagement activities to connect and expand into the community.

    • The events became a springboard to launch a funded research and engagement study to understand the opportunities for low carbon deliveries in local business operations.
